ABOUT the artist
Joyce Wynes grew up in Upstate New York at a time when women’s rights issues were being aggressively brought to the forefront of conversation and action with women marching in the streets for their rights. That experience and education shaped her into who she is today. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Nazareth College of Rochester in 1985 with a BA in Studio Art and was presented with the Gertrude Ford Award, an award given to one graduating senior and chosen from the entire arts program.
Wynes’s career as a fine art painter has taken her full circle with several periods of “painting in her spare time” modes along the road of life. In 2007, however, she decided to close her graphic design business, Wynes Desynes, Inc, and devote all of her time to her painting, both fine art and illustration. She had established herself as a professional illustrator with editorial assignments internationally since graduating from college, but now she devoted much of her time to producing and promoting her fine art paintings. Given her experience as an illustrator, Wynes was asked, in 2007, to be an Adjunct Professor in the Illustration Department at UNC Charlotte as well.
Her paintings have been exhibited in juried shows in New York, California, South Carolina and North Carolina and are held in various collections, including locally, by WFAE (NPR station in Charlotte & Hickory, NC) and Crossroads Charlotte. She was the recipient of 1st place awards in juried shows to include WFAE’s Radiovision Juried Exhbition and Cayuga Museum of History and Art’s 12 County Juried Show (in Auburn, NY). Wynes was 1 of 20 artists from the Mecklenburg County area to be awarded, in a juried competition sponsored by the Arts and Science Council, a 3-day Creative Capital Workshop. Currently Wynes’ work is being represented by Xanadu Gallery, in Scottsdale, Arizona, and her paintings can be viewed and purchased in several high-end, retail shops in Charlotte, NC.
